Summer is here, and so is the heat.

Even in the mountains, heat and humidity can be dangerous. Last year, there were 280 heat-related emergency room visits in Western North Carolina, most of them caused by heat exhaustion.

Now is the time to get prepared for heat waves:

  • Stay hydrated even if you are not thirsty. Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol and sugary beverages.
  • Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing. Don’t forget a hat.
  • Avoid direct sun, especially during the hottest parts of the day. Take breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas.
  • Check on older adults, children, neighbors, and pets.
  • Never leave children or animals in parked cars, even for a few minutes.
  • Learn the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Let’s enjoy summer safely!
